Below are several frequently asked questions about the admissions and application process for the Graduate Diplomas in Health: Science, Technology and Policy. - What is the difference between the Type 2 and the Type 3 diplomas in HSTP?

The Type 2 diploma in HSTP is strictly for current Carleton students who are registered in another masters or PhD program. This diploma is meant to be taken concurrently with another Carleton graduate program. This 2.0 credit program will supplement your disciplinary expertise with a fundamental understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methods, policy, and knowledge mobilization, particularly as they apply to the health sector.
The Type 3 diploma in HSTP is a part time program for external applicants who are seeking professional development, or who have a goal of working in the health sector and wish to gain more advanced knowledge gained through graduate course work. This 2.0 credit program will provide students with one core course in knowledge mobilization (HLTH 5300), and 1.5 credits of health-related elective courses. There is flexibility to take electives within the Department of Health Sciences, or students can explore options for health-related courses offered in other departments on campus (or through the University of Ottawa exchange courses).
- How do I apply for the Diploma in HSTP?

- Applications are submitted online: http://graduate.carleton.ca/apply-online/
- Once an applicant has submitted their online application and paid the non-refundable application fee of $100, Carleton will email instructions on how to access Carleton Central and the applicant will be assign a User ID.

- Letters of Reference (2 required – letters of reference should be submitted by former professors, preferably project/thesis supervisors).

- What should I include in the Statement of Intent document of the application?

Your Statement of Intent should be about 1000 words and indicates how you envision the interdisciplinary program in Health Sciences will further your career goals. It will be used to assess the program’s ability to meet those goals.
This document should be uploaded as a Portfolio on the Experience and Interest tab of the application.
- What GPA should I have to be considered for the program?

All applicants must have a minimum Grade Point Average of 7.0/12.0 (B- average) over the last 2 years of full time study, to be considered for the program.

- Do I need to submit my GRE score with my application?

GRE scores are not required for applications to the graduate programs in the Department of Health Sciences
- Do I need to submit official transcripts with my application?

Official transcripts (and/or WES evaluations) are not required at the time of the application. Applicants must scan copies of their original transcripts and upload them to their online application. If an applicant is successful, a conditional offer of admission will be given, and candidates must make arrangements to have officially conferred degrees and transcripts (or WES evaluations) sent directly to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs prior to enrollment in their graduate program.
- I have been working in the health sector for several years. Do my references need to be academic?

Applicants who have been in the work force for a number of years may choose to provide professional referees. Keeping in mind that academic references are typically preferred, as there are questions on the referee form that refer to the applicants skills and experience as an academic student.
- Do I need to have taken a specific statistics course in order to apply?

The statistics course must have been taken at the university, and must have been taken for the duration of one full academic term.
- What academic background is required to apply for the Diploma in HSTP?

We encourage, and accept, students from a wide range of academic backgrounds, and it is not an admission requirement to have a science degree. All applicants must have completed at least a 4 year (honours) bachelors degree to be considered for the program, and we welcome applications from those with a unique and diverse background. It is important that we admit students with various skillsets and expertise, as this helps increase the interdisciplinary nature of our collaborative program.
- Am I required to find a supervisor prior to my application?

No, this is a course-based certificate. The graduate diploma in HSTP doesn’t have a research project or thesis.
- Am I required to have completed an undergraduate thesis to be eligible to apply?

No, applicants are not required to have completed undergraduate research projects or thesis.
- Will there be available funding?

There is no departmental funding available for students in the graduate diplomas.
- I am working full time, do you offer night classes?

The Type 3 graduate diploma in HSTP requires students to take one core course (HLTH 5300) which is offer once per year in the Winter term, and is often run in the evenings (though not guaranteed). The scheduling of the remaining elective courses will vary however many of our courses are offered during the days. Prospective students can refer to the Public Class Schedule to look up course scheduling per term.
- Can I complete the graduate diploma within a year?

The diploma is a 2.0 credit certificate that can be completed within a year, on a part time basis. The program can also be completed at the pace/discretion of the student.
- What is the cost of tuition fees for the graduate diploma?

- If I start in the diploma program, can I transfer into the MSc in HSTP?

We do not provide any transfers, however you may apply for the MSc in HSTP at any point.
Please keep in mind that if you graduate from the diploma, you cannot use any completed graduate courses toward the MSc in HSTP (graduate courses cannot count toward 2 different degrees). Thus if considering an application to the MSc in HSTP, you may choose not graduate from the diploma until you receive an admissions decision about your application to the MSc in HSTP. That way, if accepted into the MSC in HSTP, up to 1.5 graduate course credits may be considered for advanced standing to count toward the MSc program.
