I’m an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Environmental Science and Department of Biology at Carleton University, and co-director of the Geomatics and Landscape Ecology Laboratory (GLEL). My research touches on a variety of themes including conservation prioritization, invasion ecology, biogeography and spatial statistics. I have a particular interest in practical questions regarding invasive species control and management to protect threatened species. I also work on theoretical questions regarding coexistence in fluctuating environments and the determinants of community assembly in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. My current projects include refining multi-species management for threatened species, deriving common lessons for Arctic and Antarctic conservation, developing new techniques for aquatic environmental assessment, and interpreting native versus exotic community patterns to inform conservation decisions.
I completed my PhD in 2012, at the University of British Columbia, working with Professor Peter Arcese on spatial ecology and conservation in the Garry Oak Ecosystem of British Columbia. From 2012 to 2015 I was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow working with Professor Hugh Possingham at the University of Queensland. Before that I worked in Laos in natural resource management, in the Canadian Arctic on environmental assessments, and as a parks biologist in Ontario.
