Annual Outdoor Chemistry Magic Show Returns to Carleton

Carleton University’s Office for Chemistry Outreach will be hosting the annual outdoor show Light Up the Night with Chemistry in the Dark. The one-hour chemistry magic show features fun for the whole family with a look at the inner workings of fireworks, explosions, spontaneous combustions and things that glow in the dark. The event will also include hands-on activities prior to the show.
This event is part of Science Odyssey, Canada’s largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and Science Rendezvous, an annual festival that takes science out of the lab and onto the street.
When: Friday, May 11, 2018. Hands-on activities will start at 7 p.m. and the magic show starts at 8:45 p.m.
Where: Alumni Park (next to Robertson Hall), Carleton University
Info: This event is free. However, donations of cash and non-perishable food for the Ottawa Food Bank are appreciated. The show is appropriate for everyone ages six and up. Please be aware that there will be loud noises that may scare some small children.
Media are invited to attend the event.
This event will inspire, educate and entertain audiences with the magic of science. The chemists will wow the crowd with the visual power of their demonstrations, highlight the underlying chemical and scientific principles behind them and explain their applications to our everyday lives.
There will be hands-on activities before the show. Guests can make ice cream with liquid nitrogen, encounter interesting smells, have fun exploring the density and solubility of common foods, see demonstrations up close and much more. This year, the magic show will be joined by the science education and outreach organization Let’s Talk Science, adding even more hands-on activities.
