Carleton to Host Beyond Brexit Conversation with German Minister of State Niels Annen

January 4, 2019

Carleton University’s Centre for European Studies (CES) will host the special event Beyond Brexit: The Future of the European Union – a conversation with Niels Annen, minister of state in the German Foreign Ministry, and Prof. Joan DeBardeleben, CES co-director. The conversation will focus on the challenges facing the European Union (EU) and potential policy responses.

When: Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019 at 10 a.m.
Where: Room 482, Discovery Centre, MacOdrum Library, Carleton

This event is full. However, media are invited to attend and are asked to
register by contacting Cathleen.Schmidt@carleton.ca.

While Brexit negotiations have taken centre stage in the public’s consciousness, the EU faces additional challenges that will shape European politics in 2019. These include defining EU policies towards global powers such as the United States, Russia and China; protecting and developing multilateral institutions; responding to issues of migration and refugee policy; dealing with populist challenges; and responding to the undemocratic tendencies of some of the EU’s member states.

About Niels Annen

Annen has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2013, and had previously been a member from 2005 to 2009. He has served on the Executive Committee of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) since 2003.
