Carleton and Carefor to Host Launch of Region’s First Young Onset Dementia Program
Carleton University, in partnership with Carefor Health & Community Services, will host the launch of a new young onset dementia program called The Club. The program brings together people aged 65 and younger who are living with dementia to keep them active and socially connected.
The Club is the first program of its kind in Ottawa.
When: Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020, at 10 a.m.
Where: Ravens’ Nest, Athletics Building, Carleton University
Who: Event speakers include Carleton President Benoit-Antoine Bacon, Carefor CEO Steve Perry, MPP Joel Harden and Robin Meyers, Carefor’s director of Ottawa Community Support Services (OCSS). A campus map is available online.

It is estimated that 16,000 Canadians are living with young onset dementia, with about 2,000 in Ottawa.
This much-needed initiative helps participants improve their quality of life and slow advancement of the disease by creating opportunities for meaningful engagement through social and recreational programs.
At The Club, 10 members take part in weekly activities overseen by Carleton staff, including swimming, badminton, jogging, weight training, fitness classes, art, trivia and group discussions.
The Club differs from traditional seniors programs as members co-design their day with staff, and enjoy an increased amount of physical activity while developing social networks with their peers.
