Online Resources and Support for the New Academic Year
Dear Members of the University Community,
I hope everyone was able to enjoy some well-deserved holidays over the summer months as we prepared for an academic year unlike any other. This week we welcome, and welcome back, our students to a virtual fall term and I would like to thank everyone for their hard work in getting courses and services prepared for this virtual experience.
Throughout the Students and Enrolment division, staff have spent the summer months supporting admissions, registration and course scheduling, preparing virtual programs, workshops and services for the year, and transitioning our numerous support offerings to a virtual environment. To help our community explore all the online services available to support student success in the areas of academics, finances, employability, campus life and wellness, we’ve compiled a Current Students Online page, which will remain an up-to-date resource at students.carleton.ca/online.
To ensure our newest Ravens are supported in their transition to Carleton, we were proud to launch a virtual Fall Orientation starting on Sept. 6, which focuses on helping incoming students adapt socially, academically and culturally to the Carleton community. You can also play a role in welcoming our students to campus by participating in the annual Ask Me campaign, which has also gone virtual this year. This welcome campaign aims to help new and returning students make a successful transition to university by encouraging them to feel comfortable contacting faculty and staff with any questions they may have. Digital Ask Me buttons and banners have been created for your social media accounts to use over the next few weeks and can be downloaded at carleton.ca/askme.
We remain committed to helping you support students and have updated our numerous resources, ensuring everything you need can be accessed digitally. Work is also underway to transition a variety of training opportunities for faculty and staff into virtual offerings including a new concentration focused on student well-being that will be implemented as part of the Student Support Certificate this fall. More information on these resources and development opportunities can be found on the Student Support website at carleton.ca/studentsupport.
We have updated our campus resources for students to support their mental health and well-being virtually this year. We have also compiled a list of provincial support resources and international support resources for students no matter where they call home. In the event you remain concerned about a struggling student, you can submit a Care Report. This will automatically begin the process of creating a confidential file in the Office of Student Affairs which will initiate appropriate followups.
In order to strengthen our team’s capacity to make important progress in equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), the Student Life Team in the Students and Enrolment division has introduced a new position of Diversity, Equity and Community Programs Coordinator, who will look to enhance current program offerings, as well as align strategic plans related to EDI within the entire Students and Enrolment division.
