Hate-Motivated Crime at U Waterloo

Published on June 30, 2023

To all members of the Carleton Community,

On Wednesday, June 28, a hate-motivated attack took place at the University of Waterloo. A professor and two students in a gender studies class were stabbed. All three victims received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries and the perpetrator has been arrested.

We are deeply saddened by this senseless act of gender-based violence and our heartfelt thoughts are with the University of Waterloo and the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Carleton is committed to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all and stands firmly against gender-based violence and all forms of bigotry and hatred. If you feel overwhelmed or are in need of support, know that you are not alone and that there are supports in place to help:

Students:

Call Carleton Counselling Services at 613-520-6674 and advise the patient care coordinator it is urgent, or come in person to our main clinic (2500 Carleton Technology and Training Centre Building) and indicate that you are in crisis.
