Prof Alex Wilner and NPSIA PhD. Grad Dr. Marshall Palmer recently published and article entitled “Deterrence and Foreign Election Intervention: Securing Democracy through Punishment, Denial, and Delegitimization” in the Journal of Global Security Studies.
Foreign interference threatens democratic elections globally. In response, democracies are employing various strategies, such as retaliation threats, enhancing election security, and leveraging international norms. Their article integrates these responses into fifth-wave deterrence theory, a new approach in coercion studies that addresses both national security and public safety. By doing so, they show a clearer understanding of foreign election interference (FEI) and offer insights into effective countermeasures.
