Dr. Kevin Budning is a national security expert and fellow at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (NPSIA). His research specializes in Canadian and US counterterrorism policies. He is also an award-winning researcher for his contributions to Canadian defence scholarship, specifically around emerging technology. His work, which spans both peer-reviewed and public commentary, has been featured in publications such as the International Journal, McGill-Queen’s University Press, the Canadian Global Affairs Institute, Diplomat & International Canada, and the Ottawa Citizen, among others.

Dr. Budning has extensive experience presenting research at government departments, including Global Affairs Canada and the Department of National Defence, as well as academic conferences and think-tanks. Prior to becoming a Fellow at NPSIA, Dr. Budning lead a multi-year academic-industry research project in collaboration with Collins Aerospace and contributed as an editor and author for iAffairs Canada, a student-run foreign policy magazine.

In addition to his academic achievements, Dr. Budning is a trusted advisor in Canadian political circles. He has served in various capacities for Members of Parliament, in the office of the Leader of the Opposition, and most recently in the “War Room” of a major political party. He has also assisted local campaigns at the municipal, provincial, and federal levels.

Dr. Budning earned his PhD in international affairs from NPSIA. He also holds degrees in Conflict Studies and Human Rights, and Political Science from the University of Ottawa and the University of Toronto, respectively.
