The research program began in 1982 and has continuously since then been examining the effects of climate change and disturbance induced warming of permafrost terrain in Yukon and near the western Arctic coast. The research is currently conducted in collaboration with the First Nation of Na Cho Nyak Dun (Mayo, Yukon) and Govt. of Yukon Highways. At the coast, the research is based at the Illisarvik experimental site and on Garry Island, both locations where the work builds on the legacy of Professor J. R. Mackay.
