April 28 is the National Day of Mourning. Since 1990, when the Workers Mourning Day Act was passed, Canada takes the time to honour those workers who have lost their lives, who have become injured or disabled on the job, or who suffer from occupational disease. It is also intended to be a day to reflect on what needs to be done to focus on prevention.

In recognition of the National Day of Mourning, the flags on Carleton’s campus will fly at half-mast.

Unfortunately, almost 1,000 workplace deaths are recorded annually across Canada, and over a 250,000 workers injured. We hope that the annual observance of this day will strengthen the resolve to establish safe conditions in the workplace for all, and that we will someday soon, see these numbers decrease significantly.

So what can you do?
Take a moment to look around you. Do you see one item that poses a hazard? A slippery area, a tripping hazard, a box that may fall down on someone, a piece of equipment that is damaged, safety equipment that is missing, a co-worker working unsafely? Fix it or report it. The best person to report to is your supervisor, otherwise report it to the Maintenance Control Centre at mcc@carleton.ca
You’ve just made our campus a little safer.
