The Carleton University Board of Governors met on September 30, 2019. The following are highlights from the meeting. Minutes from the meeting will be posted on the Board of Governors website once available.

Presentation by Chancellor Yaprak Baltacioğlu

The Board welcomed Chancellor Yaprak Baltacioğlu who provided remarks on her journey as a public servant and emphasized the importance of her Carleton degree. Chancellor Baltacioğlu expressed her joy of meeting students during convocation in June. She emphasized Carleton’s strong mission and thanked the Board for its commitment and service to the Carleton community.

New Student Residence Building

The Board approved the business case and preliminary design for a new 450 bed student residence building for occupancy in August 2022. The building will be a traditional-style residence with living and social spaces that support a safe and productive first-year experience. Featuring both single and double rooms, the new residence will address increased demand for first-year students and provide more upper year residence space in the housing portfolio.

Audited Financial Statements Approved

The Board approved the audited financial statements for the year ending April 30, 2019. Consolidated revenues of $703.0 million were up 7.2% from the previous year while consolidated expenses of $600.3 million increased by 6.0%. Excess revenues over expenses are essential to ensure the sustainability of our institution and the resulting capital reserves and appropriations are reinvested over time in major projects such as the Nicol building, Health Science building, a co-generation plant, and funds a multi-year building modernization program (deferred maintenance) towards preserving our beautiful campus. The endowed net assets that fund scholarships, Chairs and other initiatives reached $295.4 million at the end of April 2019.

President’s Report

President Bacon provided an update on recent activities and accomplishments that have taken place throughout the university since the June Board meeting and presented his goals and strategic directions for the upcoming year. These goals can be summarized under three themes: strategy, momentum and reputation. He also highlighted the strong start of the Strategic Integrated Planning Process. You can access the full report on the President’s website.
