June 2, 2021

To All Members of the Carleton Community,

I am pleased to announce that the Carleton University Board of Governors, upon the advisory committee’s recommendation, approved the reappointment of President and Vice-Chancellor Benoit-Antoine Bacon at its June 1 meeting.

Since joining Carleton on July 1, 2018, Bacon has demonstrated exceptional leadership, especially during the challenges we’ve faced with the COVID-19 pandemic. He also ushered in an ambitious new Strategic Integrated Plan based on widespread community consultation that provides a vital road map for the next five years.

In 2019, Bacon marked the conclusion of Carleton’s comprehensive $300-million fundraising campaign. He helped secure an increase of 59 per cent in annual research funding over the last three years, with a record-breaking total of $86.5 million this past year. Under his guidance, Carleton continues to rank well within the higher education sector and ranks in the Top 5 overall among comprehensive universities in Canada.

He has also overseen great strides and concrete plans to promote accessibility, sustainability, Indigenous initiatives, as well as equity, diversity and inclusion. Carleton has also expanded health services, mental health initiatives and sexual violence prevention.

The reappointment process was led by a cross-representative advisory committee. The Carleton community provided more than 300 responses through a feedback survey distributed on March 28, 2021.  After extensive review, the advisory committee unanimously recommended Bacon’s reappointment.

I would like to extend my appreciation to advisory committee members for their service and I thank the Carleton community for your involvement in the renewal process.

Under Bacon’s continued leadership, I have no doubt that Carleton will achieve new heights in higher education. Please join me in congratulating President and Vice-Chancellor Benoit-Antoine Bacon on his reappointment.

Sincerely,

Dan Fortin
Chair, Carleton University Board of Governors
