Adrian Chan

Adrian D. C. Chan was born in Montreal, PQ in 1975 and raised in Waterloo, ON. Dr. Chan received a B.A.Sc. degree in computer engineering from the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada, in 1997, a  M.A.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada in 1999, and a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, NB, Canada in 2003.

He is currently a Professor with the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering; Director of the NSERC CREATE Research and Education in Accessibility, Design, and Innovation (READi) training program; Director of the Abilities Living Laboratory (ALL); Adjunct Professor, School of Human Kinetics, University of Ottawa; and an Affiliate Investigator Bruyère Research Institute. He served in various leadership positions, including: Associate Dean (Programs and Awards), Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs; Assistant Vice-President (Academic); interim Associate Vice-President (Teaching and Learning); Director, Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Biomedical Engineering; Vice-President, Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society; and a co-founder of NeuroQore Inc. His research interests include biological signal processing, signal quality assessment, biomedical image processing, pattern recognition, assistive devices, and noninvasive sensor systems.

Dr. Chan has over 100 refereed publications and has been recognized with a number of honours including: the Governor General’s Gold Academic Medal (2003), Macleans 25 Best and Brightest (2004), Ottawa Life Sciences Council Dr. Michael Smith Promising Scientist Award (2004), Ottawa Life Magazine 50 Top People in the Capital (2005), Carleton University Spirit Recognition Award (2006), and the UNB Young Alumni Award (2006), Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society Early Career Achievement Award (2008), Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation Capital Educator’s Award (2008), the Carleton University Teaching Achievement Award (2009), IEEE Ottawa Outstanding Engineering Educator Award (2011), Carleton University Research Achievement Award (2013), Carleton University Provost’s Fellowship in Teaching (2013), Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society Outstanding Biomedical Engineer of the Year (2015), and Carleton University’s Faculty Graduate Mentoring Award (2017).

He is Registered Professional Engineer, a Senior Member of the IEEE, member of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, member of the Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society, member of the and Biomedical Engineering Society, and 3M Teaching Fellow.

Dr. Chan remains heavily involved in his community. He served as the Carleton University Shad Valley Program Director from 2004-2009; Shad Valley is program for remarkable senior high school students, aimed at developing their intellectual excellence, initiative, and leadership, while challenging them to meet the highest standards of ethical conduct, social responsibility, and environmental sustainability. Dr. Chan is also the faculty representative for the Carleton University Engineers Without Borders chapter and the IEEE EMBS student club. He is also a member of the Ottawa Co-operators Community Advisory Panel.

Adrian D.C. He served in various leadership positions at Carleton University, including: Associate Dean (Programs and Awards), Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs; Assistant Vice-President (Academic); and interim Associate Vice-President (Teaching and Learning). Dr. Chan has over 100 refereed publications and has been recognized with a number of honours including CMBES’ Outstanding Biomedical Engineer of the Year and the 3M National Teaching Fellowship. He is a Registered Professional Engineer, a Senior Member of the IEEE, member of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, member of the Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society, member of the Biomedical Engineering Society, and 3M Teaching Fellow.

Adrian has been elected to the Board of Governors for a three-year term commencing July 1, 2022 and ending on June 30, 2025.
