I believe that I would be an excellent candidate to be considered as a Student Governor because this year and the next will be difficult, and I am ready to advocate for you. Let me start by introducing myself, I’m Allison. I was born in British Columbia, I did my Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of British Columbia, and am doing my Master of Arts degree in political science at Carleton. I studied and worked in Italy (ciao!), Slovenia (zdravo!), and Spain (¡hola!).

In September, when I returned to Canada after a year spent teaching English in the Canary Islands, the plan was to move into a tastefully decorated studio apartment in Ottawa, attend classes with newfound friends at Carleton, and enjoy a happy hour or two. Thanks to the pandemic, you can find me in BC, living with my parents, my beagle Jimmy, and my anxiety. Who hasn’t been challenged by the pandemic? From frozen Zoom calls to depression naps, no-shower marathons to binge watching Netflix, forgotten deadlines to too much time wasted on TikTok – need I go on?

As a Student Governor, I would want to hear about your experiences during the pandemic. How can I help you? Better yet, how can Carleton help you? Together, we can identify issues, consider solutions, and make changes. So, how do we chart a course forward after a global pandemic? We do it together.

I voiced my concerns as a student, and now I want to listen. Elect Allison Brown for Student Governor.

I have the following skills and experiences which would be beneficial in my role as Student Governor:

  • Skilled at listening, supporting, and collaborating with others in a team or leadership capacity as expanded through the position of Co-President in Rotex 5060 and Co-Editor in the University of British Columbia Okanagan’s “That’s What [We] Said” Editorial
  • Strong research and analytical skills developed through undergraduate/graduate studies and working as a Research Assistant
  • Excellent written communication skills advanced through writing research papers and briefs
  • Exceptional time-management and organizational skills from being a Teaching Assistant
  • Manage and resolve conflicts successfully as a result of teaching English to children and adults
  • Self-motivated with a strong work ethic gained through study abroad opportunities in Italy, Slovenia, India, and Spain

If elected to the Board, what would you like to gain from the experience and/or what skills would you like to further develop?

I would like to gain experience working with university governance and administration by helping them identify and solve problems for students. Being Student Governor is an opportunity to be a part of the decisions that affect me and my peers. It’s a chance to listen, learn, and lead our community to better days.
