Question 1: I believe that I would be an excellent candidate to be considered as a Student Governor because:
I believe that I would be an excellent candidate to be considered as a Student Governor because of my proven track record of effective leadership and hard work in serving and representing students at Carleton University. Throughout my journey at Carleton, I have been driven by a vision for improvement that involves listening to student concerns, fully understanding them, and prioritizing a collaborative approach to advocacy and problem-solving.
My goal is clear: to ensure that the student body not only benefits from high-quality education but thrives in an environment that listens to their needs and actively addresses them.
While undergraduate students are young, our views are diverse and informed by experience. I would ensure that the perspectives of undergraduate students are more actively brought into the decision-making of Carleton University’s Board of Governors and I would advocate that university stakeholders prioritize listening to and understanding student concerns.
If elected, my work on the Board of Governors would contribute to a university community that is more inclusive, more responsive, and genuinely more student-centric.
Question 2: I have the following skills and experiences which would be beneficial in my role as Student Governor:
During my time at Carleton, I have been actively involved in campus and the wider community in numerous leadership roles where I believe that I have actively demonstrated my unwavering devotion to serving students with passion and effectiveness.
Since May 2023, I have served as the Vice President Internal of the Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA). In this capacity, I have been responsible for leading policy development, serving as the organization’s governance officer, and more significantly, overseeing a clubs and societies system boasting more than 200 active student groups. I was proud to lead a successful referendum initiative to support Carleton University’s sole food bank for undergraduate students, the Unified Support Centre, in response to the overwhelming surge of students facing food insecurity. Between my experience at CUSA and my experience serving on the board of Carleton Athletics, I have developed a deep understanding of student union governance and a maturing understanding of university and corporate governance. This experience will enhance my ability to effectively advocate for student interests at the Board of Governors.
I am also actively involved with many clubs on campus, most notably as the Co-President of the Carleton Political Science Society. I have strived to contribute to the vibrancy of campus by leading the organization of large and well-recognized events such as Carleton Model Parliament.
My experience as a student leader is supplemented by over two years of working in the public administration of the House of Commons. This professional experience has enriched my understanding of organizational dynamics and governance structures.
Question 3: If elected to the Board, what would you like to gain from the experience and/or what skills would you like to further develop?
If elected to the Board, my primary objectives would be twofold. Firstly, I would wish to develop a comprehensive understanding of the governance structures and decision-making processes at the university level. This would allow me to better advocate for student interests and shape policies and practices more effectively across the university.
Secondly, I aspire to develop my skills in collaborative leadership and strategic decision-making. Serving on the Board presents an opportunity to collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders from across the university and Ottawa community to benefit students. Refining these skills will be crucial to driving positive change within the university community.
