Question 1: I believe that I would be an excellent candidate to be considered as a Student Governor because:
I believe I’m a great fit for the role of Student Governor because my life has been a journey of diverse experiences. Born in a third-world country and growing up in a first-world one, I’ve seen the world from different angles.
For me, being a leader means more than just holding a position; it’s about understanding people and their stories. That’s why, besides my leadership roles at EESA and RPCB, I work as a security guard at CUSA’s Ollies. It’s not just a job – it’s a chance to chat with students, hear their thoughts, and get a real sense of what matters to them.
My commitment extends beyond casual interactions, as I participate in significant forums representing Carleton and the innovation hub. I’ve had the privilege of engaging with ministers, business owners, and individuals from various walks of life. From growing up in a marginalized neighborhood in Scarborough to extensive travel and exposure to diverse cultures, my life experiences have equipped me with a broad and inclusive perspective.
As the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung once said, ‘If one does not understand a person, one tends to regard him as a fool.’ It is my aspiration to understand and represent each student, recognizing that we, as students, are the clients deserving of being heard and understood. We’re the heart of this community, and our voices deserve to be heard. As your Student Governor, my mission is to ensure that every student’s story and viewpoint is not just acknowledged, but woven into the fabric of our university’s decisions.
Question 2: I have the following skills and experiences which would be beneficial in my role as Student Governor:
In my recent role with the Innovation Hub at Carleton University, I gained invaluable insights into how the real world operates. This experience exposed me to the intricate processes of policy-making, the execution of policies by policymakers and ministers, and the collaborative efforts of companies in forming strategic partnerships. Being part of initiatives that aim to make a positive impact on the world through innovation and entrepreneurship has equipped me with a nuanced understanding of the broader landscape.
Additionally, my involvement in the Carleton Residence Peer Conduct Board has provided me with a unique perspective on student conduct. As a board member, I sit in front of students who have violated residence conduct codes, engaging in discussions about their actions and determining appropriate sanctions. This role has demanded the utmost confidentiality, enhancing my skills in maintaining discretion and handling sensitive matters.
Through this position, I’ve experienced significant personal development and deepened my understanding of Indigenous awareness, equity, diversity, and inclusion. It has given me insights into the minds of those who violate rules, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the underlying motivations.
On another front, as a co-founder and current Vice President Finance of the Eritrean and Ethiopian Student Association under CUSA, I’ve developed essential organizational skills. Beyond bookkeeping, my role involves event coordination, fostering community engagement, and creating an atmosphere that brings people together. These experiences have not only honed my administrative abilities but have also taught me the importance of building a sense of community and eliciting positive emotions.
In summary, my experiences with the Innovation Hub, the Carleton Residence Peer Conduct Board, and the Eritrean and Ethiopian Student Association have collectively equipped me with a diverse skill set. I believe these skills, ranging from policy understanding to community engagement, position me well to contribute effectively as a Student Governor, bringing a multifaceted perspective to the table.
Question 3: If elected to the Board, what would you like to gain from the experience and/or what skills would you like to further develop?
If elected to the Board, my primary goal is personal and professional growth. I aspire to further refine my communication skills in a formal setting and enhance my strategic decision-making abilities. These skills are pivotal in contributing effectively to the Board’s discussions and decisions.
Moreover, I am keenly interested in leveraging this experience to actively engage with the Carleton University community. I believe in the transformative power of connections, and I am committed to fostering not only my personal network but also facilitating connections among all undergraduate students. While I consider myself fortunate to be somewhat of an extrovert who readily puts myself out there, I am acutely aware that many students may be missing out on the profound opportunities for networking that university offers.
My vision is to break down barriers and draw students out of their comfort zones, creating a more connected and vibrant community. I want to ensure that every undergraduate student at Carleton has the chance to build meaningful connections, recognizing that a university experience is not just about education but also about the invaluable network one can cultivate.
In essence, my aim is to contribute to the Board’s endeavors while simultaneously working to bridge the gap in networking opportunities within the Carleton community. I believe that by fostering a sense of connection and community, we can enhance the overall university experience for every student.
