It is with great relief and happiness that the Department of Sociology and Anthropology shares the news that Cihan Erdal, doctoral candidate in Sociology, has made it back to Canada safely. Cihan was illegally detained in Turkey almost two years ago as part of a politically-motivated sweep of left-wing activists and politicians by the current Turkish government. With the incredible mobilizing efforts of Cihan’s life partner, Omer Ongun, and the support of many others in Canada and globally, Cihan has finally returned home to Ottawa. His unlawful detention, condemned by the European Parliament, the UN, and Amnesty International, is an important reminder of the importance of upholding the freedom to dissent without fear of arrest or recrimination.
