“My undergraduate and MA degrees completed with the Soc/Anth department at Carleton University gave me the skills and experience to become a critical thinker and strong writer in the work world. I completed a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Sociology, minoring in French, and a Master of Arts in Sociology, specialising in quantitative methods. I decided to do both of my degrees with the Soc/Anth department because of the supportive supervisors I had encountered as well as being rewarded a generous Teaching Assistant and scholarship package for my MA.
My MA research paper investigated the correlation between refugee sponsorship policy and domestic violence against women. My wonderful supervisor, Augustine Park, supported me throughout the early phases of planning, data collection, analysing and of course, the write-up! I moved to Australia immediately after finishing my MA and was able to pick up work very quickly. My academic credentials were recognised in Australia and gave me a competitive edge in the job market. I was able to secure positions in very interesting non-profit organisations (community centre, refugee settlement service, sexual assault service board member) and am now working at a research centre within a university business school.
The diverse skills and theoretical base I gained during my study has translated to a rewarding and dynamic career, and I am grateful to all I learned during my time with the Soc/Anth department.”
