"My time at Carleton was formative – it truly made me the person I am today. I participated in the student society (the SAGSC) and student politics (which segued into municipal politics in Ottawa), helped found a student newspaper, and made dozens of lifelong friendships and connections. Some of my best friends today are people I met while I was in graduate school. In the SOSA department, I found the best supervisor I could have asked for (Andrea Doucet, now at Brock University). I still work with her today as a co-investigator on her giant, nation-wide SSHRC Partnership project. Janet SIltanen, my PhD co-supervisor, still influences my work too—especially my teaching; so many others, like Wally Clement and Bruce Curtis, influenced and inspired me along the way. I think the mix of courses, professional development, supervision and mentorship, community and collegiality, and a healthy amount of s***-disturbing, helped set me up for the world after graduation. I work in a joint Sociology/Social Anthropology department now and I routinely draw on my experiences from Carleton when I’m teaching, supervising or participating in university governance and administration."
