Building Strong Foundations: Communication Skills for Student Support
In this interactive workshop, faculty and staff will explore essential communication strategies designed to enhance student support in a post-secondary environment. Participants will learn tools for effective verbal and written communication, as well as techniques for communicating during heightened emotional states through an exploration of foundational de-escalation skills.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this workshop, staff and faculty will be able to:
- Differentiate between methods of communication and their intended purpose
- Apply advanced active listening techniques, including the use of empathy statements
- Recognize different styles of written communication and how to adapt
- Identify techniques to communicate effectively during heightened emotional states

Session length: 2 hours
This workshop may include the following activities:
- Periods of sitting
- Listening to a facilitator
- Discussion and interaction with colleagues
- Viewing a multimedia presentation
