Hello,

My name is Breanna Mastroianni, and I’m an undergraduate student in the department of Biology at the University of Ottawa. I’m working on a research project under the supervision of Dr. Alexandra Pettit of Carleton University and Dr. Colin Montpetit of the University of Ottawa.

We are inviting you to participate in a survey about students’ attitudes towards active learning in science. This survey is part of a research project (4th year thesis) with the objective to study how student’s motivation, self-efficacy, science identity, and introversion/extraversion influence their buy-in to active learning.

You will answer a series of questions using a 5-point Likert scale ranging from “strongly disagree to “strongly agree”. With your consent, survey answers will be collected on Qualtrics.

The questions will address:

  • Your exposure, persuasion, identification, and commitment to active learning teaching methods
  • Your growth mindset
  • Your intrinsic/extrinsic motivation, self-efficacy, science identity and introversion/extraversion
  • Your learning strategies

Your participation in this research will consist of completing a 25-minute survey and is available online at this address: https://carletonu.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_4T8NDcrCHBPSuJU

Participants who choose to complete the survey will have the option to provide their email to be entered into a draw to win one of ten $20 gift cards of their choice (e.g., Starbucks, Second Cup, Tim Hortons). The only requirement for participation is that you provide an email address at the end of the initial survey to be eligible for the draw. Participation in this study is entirely optional and participants can withdraw from the study at any time. You will have the right to end your participation in the study at any time, for any reason. If you choose to withdraw, all data gathered until the time of withdrawal will not be collected. Because of the anonymous nature of the study, data cannot be withdrawn once it has been submitted.

We do not anticipate any risks from taking part in the survey. Participating in this research will provide you with an opportunity to reflect on and express your attitudes toward active learning in your science courses. Care will be taken to protect your identity. This will be done by keeping all responses anonymous. Completing and submitting the answers to the survey is completely voluntary and your professors will not know if you participated in this survey.

All research data will be encrypted/password-protected. Any hard copies of data including any handwritten notes or USB keys, etc. will be kept in a locked cabinet in the supervisor’s office at Carleton University. Research data will only be accessible by the researcher and the research supervisors.

This research has been cleared by Carleton University Research Ethics Board Clearance #118637 and the University of Ottawa Research Ethics Board Clearance #H-12-22-8724.

Should you have any ethical concerns with the study, please contact the REB Chair, Carleton University Research Ethics Board-B (by phone: 613-520-2600 ext. 4085 or by email: ethics@carleton.ca); University of Ottawa Research Ethics Board (by phone: 613-562-5387 or by email: ethics@uottawa.ca). For all other questions about the study, please contact the researcher.

We appreciate your collaboration in helping us carry out this research project. We thank you for the time and attention you are willing to devote to your participation.

If you have any questions about the research, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,

Breanna Mastroianni
