The Centre for European Studies (CES) has been selected for a new grant from the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union. The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at Carleton University will receive €100,000 (approximately $161,000) for the 2027–2030 grant period.

The new Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence will focus on two thematic priorities: (1) EU–Canada policy cooperation in a changing transatlantic context, with a focus on trade, security and risks to democracy. (2) The impact of disruptive technologies on EU–Canada cooperation in a new geopolitical environment, with a focus on critical mineral supply security amid changes to established trade regimes; the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence and quantum technologies across economic, commercial and public sectors; and gaps in leadership and collective action on climate change and environmental degradation.

The grant will support academic lectures, workshops and publications; a visiting scholars program; research trips for graduate students; training for university and high school students; and outreach activities for the policy and business communities.

The Centre of Excellence brings together a core team of seven scholars from Carleton University and the University of Ottawa and is coordinated by CES Co-Director Crina Viju-Miljusevic.
