In this EU Policy Video Series interview, “The Italian Case of Ancestral Citizenship: Who Gets to Belong?”, Dr. Thales Speroni offers a comparative analysis of how extraterritorial access to citizenship reshapes visions of Europe across generations. Focusing on the Italian case, he explores the frictions between normative expectations embedded in citizenship law and the actual migratory projects of recently recognized citizens. He was interviewed on April 14, 2026, at Carleton University, in Ottawa, Canada.
Dr. Speroni is postdoctoral fellow with Centre Norbet Elias, French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and he is a member of the ACE Project (Ancestral Citizenship in Europe), funded by the Volkswagen Foundation.
