B.Hum Graduate 2017

What was your experience like in the program and how has your degree helped your career?

I was thrilled to find a program that allowed me to dive into the theoretical foundations of philosophy, history, political science and art, while allowing for complementary electives to broaden our reach. For example, I chose to support my humanities education with both Indigenous and Canadian studies, as well as Technology, Society and Environment studies. As someone with multiple passions, I felt able to explore many areas at once. Its rigorous workload and high expectations helped prepare me for both an MA and PhD, as well as a fulfilling career.

As a multidisciplinary degree, HUMS doesn’t fit into one box. This, I believe, is one of its strengths. HUMS equipped me with the ability to question both my assumptions and those of others and to workshop ideas with my peers; all foundational leadership competencies in today’s public service. Human-centred programs are becoming a rarity, but are exactly what we need in this time of societal and technological change. Throughout my last ten years as a multidisciplinary public servant, it has become evident that an education in the humanities is a significant asset to work in any area, including policy, user experience (UX), programs and communications, among many other promising avenues. I am proud to say that my education in the humanities has greatly supported my ability to jump into different fields of work with ease, and has allowed me to lead with empathy, integrity, and with a broad understanding of the world.
