Iain Moggach ( He/Him )
Bachelor of Humanities, Theatre director and producer, Arts Consultant
B.Hum Graduate 2012
What was your experience like in the program?
I had an excellent time at the College of Humanities. Some of my most fond memories come from working on the Greek tragedies with Josh Beer. His enthusiasm for the text, and working with such a passionate group of people, was always so much fun.
Something that really struck me was how HUMS (and its professors) led me to falling in love with writers and philosophies that I never would have expected. I have never been much of a believer, but I remember being surprised to find Kierkegaard and the ‘leap to faith’ quite a compelling ideology. I also found the Neoplatonic explanations and examinations of Plato’s forms to be elegant and accessible. To be exposed to all this incredible material so young, and have it impact the way you think, is something our world needs more of.
How has your B.Hum degree helped your career?
I utilize what I learned in HUMS almost every day. As a theatre director, a knowledge of the philosophies, political movements, and artistic trends of different eras in history has put me well-ahead of my peers. Perhaps more importantly, HUMS taught me how to analyse text and write compelling essays. These skills are an extraordinary asset in my line of work.
