Biography

Ian Cameron came to Carleton’s English department in 1967, after graduate study at the University of Toronto and, thanks to a fellowship of the Rockefeller Foundation, the Harvard Divinity School. He has served in various capacities in the university, including the chair of the English department and membership in the committee of four that planned and established the College of the Humanities. He has taught courses in English literature of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and eighteenth century, in style, rhetoric, and propaganda, in writing, and in poetry, and he has supervised M.A. theses and research essays in all areas of British literature. He has published a book on business communications, a book (with others) on the poet George Johnston, and articles on English voyages of exploration, English romances of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, and the sermons preached to the Long Parliament. He has given papers on rhetoric and propaganda and on many aspects of political and religious writing of seventeenth-century England, particularly that connected to the civil war. He is currently at work on a book on Shakespeare, on a combined biography of four Puritan preachers of the English civil war, and on a collection of essays on propaganda, entitled Where the Thinking Stops.
