Katherine Coady ( She/Her )
Bachelor of Humanities, Disabilities Coordinator & Learning Strategist, Paul Menton Centre
B.Hum Graduate 2004
What was your experience like in the program?
Now that I have over 15 years of experience working at two different post-secondary institutions, I’ve seen how isolated students in larger programs can sometimes feel. This has given me an even deeper appreciation for the strong sense of connection between peers fostered through the Humanities Program, as well as for the program’s structure in providing a clear foundation and guidance throughout the four-year degree. I’m incredibly proud to be a Humanities graduate—even if I sometimes have to explain what that degree means when my students notice it on my office wall!
How has your B.Hum degree helped your career?
It helped me develop the metacognitive, reading, writing, and study strategies that I now teach in my role as a Learning Strategist and that I also drew on during my own Master’s and teaching degrees. It also shaped me into a deeper, broader, and more thoughtful thinker than I was when I first entered the program. As a Disabilities Coordinator, I support students with disabilities and collaborate with faculty to implement accommodation plans. When addressing complex needs, this often involves systems-level thinking and the ability to see beyond conventional approaches—both skills I developed in the Humanities program.
