Colloquium
The Department of Cognitive Science hosts a weekly series from September to March featuring speakers from within and outside Carleton University. We hope you’ll join us for traditional research talks, panel discussions, career development talks or showcases of labs. Our Colloquium series is held on Wednesdays at 3:00 p.m. in DT 2203 and is often available virtually, via zoom.

Our September 30th Professional Development Workshop is entitled Avoiding Burnout.
Imposter syndrome, burnout, and rejection are experiences almost everyone in higher education faces, yet very few of us feel empowered to talk about them openly. Hosted by the Women in Cognitive Science Canada + Trainee Board, this workshop offers practical strategies and a supportive space to help you:
• Reframe Imposter Syndrome & Burnout: Recognize the signs and build habits for well-being.
• Normalize Rejection: Shift how you view setbacks and build resilience.
• Change Your Mindset: Reclaim your space and confidence in post-secondary academia.
Join us for a session focused on thriving, not just surviving, in academia.
Diya, Marie, Sarah, and Leah are graduate students from the University of Ottawa and Carleton, and members of the WiCSC+ Trainee Board. Having navigated academia, from grant rejections to criticism to academic burnout, they bring their practical strategies and firsthand experiences to help students reframe their mindsets and thrive in higher education.
Spring Conference
Each spring, the department holds an annual Spring Conference. The central aim of the conference is to provide a venue for students in Cognitive Science – at the Master’s and PhD level, as well as undergraduate students completing a thesis or project– to present and receive feedback on their work, and to interact with each other in a friendly, supportive, and inclusive environment.
We welcome submissions that make an original contribution to research topics in any of the sub-disciplines of cognitive science, including: philosophy of mind/language/cognitive science, linguistics, cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience, computer science and AI, cognitive anthropology, and education. We especially encourage submissions from members of underrepresented groups.
