Highly Ranked Scholar: Jacques Albert
By: Blythe Armstrong

The Department of Electronics is proud to celebrate a remarkable milestone – Jacques Albert was named a 2024 Highly Ranked ScholarGPS based on his accomplishments over the totality of his career especially in the fields of Fiber Bragg Grating (#7) and Sensor (#334).
As a part of this recognition, we caught up with our esteemed colleague to learn more about his current activities, reflections, and sources of inspiration.
Although no longer working in a traditional lab setting, research and collaboration are very much a part of Jacques’ day-to-day life. Engaging remotely with colleagues and students both at Carleton University and across the globe, he continues to contribute knowledge and perspective built over more than 40 years – since earning his Bachelor’s degree in 1978!
When discussing his most rewarding moments, Jacques recalls that the most satisfying experiences have often come quietly – when a student is immersed in a project and discovers something new and ends up teaching their mentor a fresh concept or cutting-edge technique. These moments of reciprocal learning have been some of the most fulfilling.
For those just beginning a career in electronics research, the advice is simple but crucial, Jacques says
“Be prepared to adapt to a very rapidly changing world”
The pace of change in this field is extraordinary, and flexibility is key to thriving within it.
The torch has been passed with confidence and gratitude. Hubert Jean-Ruel, now leading the photonics lab, is not only advancing established research and collaborations, but is also introducing exciting new directions and partnerships. The future of the lab – and the broader research community – looks very promising.
Outside of academia, Jacques’ balance and joy have come from many sources. The natural world – whether through hiking, canoeing, cycling, or skiing – offers renewal. Literature, the arts, and most importantly family, continue to enrich and surprise him in the best possible ways.
Welcome from the Chair
— Dr. Leonard MacEachern
Welcome to the Department of Electronics, where you’ll find an exciting blend of hands-on learning and innovation.

Whether you’re passionate about building electrical machines, designing integrated circuits, or exploring photonic technology, our programs offer you the chance to bring your ideas to life. While we certainly embrace coding and simulations, we go beyond the screen by focusing on creating real, tangible systems.
You can choose from three core programs—Electrical Engineering (EE), Engineering Physics (EngPhys), and Sustainable and Renewable Energy Engineering (SREE-A)—each offering unique opportunities to match your interests.
Within EE, we also offer specializations like power systems, integrated devices, RF/microwave circuits, and more, so you can tailor your learning to what excites you most.
We can’t wait to see what you’ll build with us!
Join us on an exciting journey where innovation meets expertise!
As one of Canada’s largest and most research-intensive departments, we’re at the forefront of electronic circuit design, RF and microwave circuits, photonics, and integrated circuit technology. Our vibrant community is fueled by passionate students and guided by our internationally respected faculty, who are dedicated to helping you excel.
Whether you’re drawn to the latest advancements in sustainable energy or the intricacies of circuit design, you’ll find your place here. Explore your potential and be part of a legacy of innovation!
