What You Should KnowRed divider

Email Communication

Activate your Carleton Student Email: As a student, you will have an official Carleton email address that the university will use to communicate important information to you. Learn how to activate your Carleton student email.

The Department of Economics will only answer email requests from your Carleton email account. Any emails received from Yahoo, Gmail, or other email providers will be told to resend their email using their Carleton email address.

First Year Degree Planning

Before you register, please consult the First Year Course Selection Guide for your program. This will help you to register in the correct courses for your degree program.

If you have any questions, check the frequently asked questions page: Undergraduate FAQs.

Check out the Undergraduate Calendar for course descriptions, prerequisites and preclusions. You still need to learn how to read your academic audit, which reflects program requirements when you enter a program. It does not change, unlike the Undergraduate Calendar. The academic audit is your road map to graduation. See below.

2024-2025 Academic Year Dates and Deadlines:  Contains the dates prescribed by the University Senate for academic activities.

Check your audit!

The Academic Audit is the ‘road map’ to academic success. It lists which courses you are required to take in order to complete your degree at Carleton.

Be sure to look at your audit often to make sure you are on the right track. The audit will inform you of the progress you have already made, as well as show you the courses that you will need to take in the future. Remember to check your audit regularly to ensure you are fulfilling your degree requirements!

Please note:

The audit is different than your transcript. The audit is not an official document. It lists all courses taken, but not all courses necessarily included towards your CGPA(s). The transcript needs to be ordered formally through the Registrar’s Office and lists every course ever taken at Carleton, whether it counts towards your degree or not.

ECON 0005: Conditional Offer of AdmissionRed divider

An exclamation mark

Students with a Conditional Offer in Economics

Students admitted with a conditional offer to the B.Econ (Honours) with an additional requirement in economics, must complete ECON 0005: Preparatory Mathematics for Economics in their first term of study with a minimum of C- or higher to be eligible to continue in their current program and continue with courses like ECON 1401: Elementary Mathematics for Economics I in the subsequent term.

Students must check their Offer of Admission Letter for any existing conditions on the OUAC website under the “View Offers” tab or on Carleton360.

ElectivesRed divider

To make up the regular 5.0 credit course load, students should add electives.

Please note:

  • The number of elective courses you will need each term will vary depending on how many courses you take in your major and/or concentration.
  • You should prioritize the courses in your major and/or concentration before considering which electives you want to take as part of your program.
  • The credits not included in the major CGPA are comprised of credits in electives that cannot be in ECON, and credits in free electives that can be in any subject, including ECON.
  • Free electives in ECON are extra to the major and concentration requirements.

Economics Electives Suggestions

Students are advised to consider taking COMP 1005 and a 1000-level Political Science course (for example, PSCI 1100 or PSCI 1200 ), ENGL 1020, PSYC 1001 or PHIL 2001.

First Year Seminars

First year students should consider taking FYSM 1608: Selected Topics in Economics [1.0 credit], FYSM 1908: One-Term Seminar in Economics [0.5 credit] or for a complete listing and description of the first-year seminars being offered visit the First Year Seminar website.

First-year seminars will get you away from the lecture hall and give you the chance, in a small class setting, to discuss and debate topics with your classmates and professors. You will also receive early and frequent feedback on class assignments and instruction in research, writing, and study skills.

Registration Information Red divider

All you need to know about registration is on the Registration Website.

Time Tickets

Confirm your Time Ticket information to identify when you may start registering for your courses. Register for both Fall and Winter terms when your Time Ticket opens. If you wait to register, you may not be able to select your preferred courses. For more information about Time Tickets, visit https://carleton.ca/registrar/registration/time-tickets/.

Please contact the Registrar’s Office at registrar@carleton.ca for information about how your year standing which may affect your fall/winter registration Time Ticket.

Time Conflicts

Keep in mind that University Policy does not permit undergraduate and special students to register in courses with time conflicts. If you select courses with a time conflict, a warning message will appear on your worksheet, and you will be prevented from registering until you adjust your schedule to create a conflict free timetable.

Year Standing

A student’s year standing depends on how many courses are completed and counting in the academic audit towards their degree requirements. It does not include courses that are set aside on the academic audit. Please see Year Standing – Academic Advising  for a breakdown of year standing.

Prerequisites and Preclusions

“Preclusions” is a term used to describe two or more courses that contain sufficient content that overlaps, and therefore credit cannot be counted in the academic audit for more than one of the courses. For example, MATH 1007 precludes credit for MATH 1004. If you take MATH 1007, and subsequently register for MATH 1004, it would forfeit MATH 1007 in the audit and MATH 1007 would no longer count for credit. A “preclusion” does not mean that the courses are necessarily deemed equivalent.

Please note:

  • DEF(erred final grade) status at the end of a course precludes (continued) registration in any other course for which the former is a prerequisite. For example, if you defer the final exam for ECON 1401, you may be deregistered in ECON 1402. Please reach out to the Department of Economics (economics@carleton.ca) if you have any questions.

The Department of Economics enforces all course prerequisites and program requirements as outlined in the Undergraduate Calendar.

Registration Override Requests

Students seeking permission to register in a closed section of a course may submit a registration request via the Registration Override Request feature located on Carleton Central. Please note that submitting a request does not guarantee your registration in a course.

Please note:

  • Override requests are processed by the department offering the course. If you are hoping to request access to a course not offered by the Department of Economics, please contact the appropriate department.

For a full list of departmental advisors, please see this link:

https://carleton.ca/academicadvising/departmental-advisors-a-z/

If you have non-Carleton equivalents for prerequisite courses, you may be required to provide supporting documentation (i.e. transcripts) for evaluation purposes. Please do not contact the departmental office or the instructor of the course for updates on the status of your request – an automatic response will be sent to your Carleton email with the status of your request.

Courses That Are Full

If you are trying to register in a course that is full, please monitor Carleton Central frequently throughout the registration period, to check for availability should a space become available as students add and drop courses.

If you require a course to graduate at the end of the term of registration, please plan to register in that course as soon as your Time Ticket opens.

Summer Course Registration

Hours and scheduling for summer session courses will differ significantly from those reported in the fall and winter. Your timetable should not be planned around the summer term, as there is no guarantee the course you are interested in taking will be offered.

The summer class schedule is available through Carleton Central. Or, if you are not currently a Carleton student, you can use our Public Class Schedule to search the course offerings.

For more information on summer courses, please consult the Academic Calendar and/or the Department of Economics (economics@carleton.ca).
