Trouble Shooting Guide for Sources of Eyestrain / Headaches
The following lists some possible causes of eyestrain and headache amongst computer users. Potential corrective action to consider are also listed.
Monitor Distance
- Keep monitor at roughly one arm’s length away when seated comfortably.
- Having the monitor too close or too far can lead to unnecessary eye fatigue.
Glare and Reflections
- Tilt the screen slightly forward to reduce glare from overhead lights.
- Avoid positioning you monitor directly in front of windows or bright light sources.
- Use blinds or curtains to control natural light and consider an anti-glare filter if needed.
Font Size and Screen Contrast
- Choose a font size large enough to read while sitting comfortably in the chair.
- Adjust the brightness, contrast and colour setting to find the most comfortable display for your eyes.
Visual Breaks
- Take frequent vision breaks and focus on distant objects approximately 6 meters away for 15 seconds.
- Change postures and stretch to relieve muscle tension.
Corrective Lenses
- If you wear bifocals, trifocals, or progressive lenses, you may unknowingly tilt your head or look upward to use the correct part of the lens. To avoid this, lower your monitor slightly so you can see through the right section while keeping your neck in a neutral position.
