Trouble Shooting Guide for Lower Back Discomfort
The following lists some possible causes of lower back discomfort amongst computer users. Potential corrective actions to consider are also listed.
Backrest height not properly adjusted
- Adjust the backrest height so that it aligns with the curve of the lower back and provides continuous contact and support.
- Ensure that the backrest tilt promotes an upright yet relaxed and comfortable sitting position.
Prolonged sitting and poor sitting position
- Leaning on one armrest or slouching can place uneven pressure on the spine hence maintain a neutral seated position, keeping the user’s backrest aligned with the backrest and shoulders relaxed.
- Take frequent posture and standing breaks.
Seat pan too deep
- Adjust the backrest horizontally to reduce the distance between the front edge of the seat and the backrest.
- If adjustments are limited, consider a chair with a shorter seat pan or use a strap-on lumbar cushion or pillow to provide adequate back support.
Keyboard or mouse positioned too far away
- Position the keyboard and mouse close to the user to maintain a neutral sitting posture and continuous back support.
Feet not well supported
- Use a footrest when chair height prevents feet from resting flat on the floor and ensuring stable and balanced support.
