Trouble Shooting Guide for Shoulder / Upper Arm Discomfort
The following lists some possible causes of shoulder and upper arm discomfort amongst computer users. Potential corrective actions to consider are also listed.
Static posture and stress
- For every hour of continuous computer work, incorporate a five-minute break to stretch, change posture or perform alternate tasks.
Mouse Positioning
- Position the mouse close to the body, to reduce arm extension and shoulder strain.
Workstation Setup
- Adjust the desk such that the keyboard aligns with neutral elbow position.
- Adjust chair armrests closer to the body or remove them if restrictive.
- Alternatively if a sit stand desk is not available, lower the keyboard height by raising the height of the chair and use a footrest.
- Install a keyboard tray or lower armrest to prevent shoulder elevation.
Frequent overhead/extended reaches, or leaning to the side
- Keep frequently used items within easy reach, close to the body.
- Avoid repetitive overhead movements or side leans that require twisting of the spine.
