Trouble Shooting Guide for Upper Back Discomfort
The following lists some possible causes of upper back discomfort amongst computer users. Potential corrective actions to consider are also listed.
Frequent or prolonged reaching
- Keep frequently used material and devices within easy reach and avoid overhead or behind the body movements that involve twisting.
Inadequate back support
- Ensure that the users chair backrest provides full support to the upper and lower back.
- Occasionally change postures, do brief stretches and take breaks throughout the workday.
Improper armrest height
- Adjust chair armrests so that the forearms are supported without elevating or depressing the shoulders.
- Adjust the keyboard, mouse or work surface so that elbows remain at approximately 90-100 degrees and shoulders are relaxed.
- Armrests or wrist supports may be used to maintain a relaxed posture.
