Trouble Shooting Guide for Discomfort in Wrist / Hand / Forearm / Elbow
The following lists some possible causes of wrist/hand/forearm/elbow discomfort amongst computer users. Potential corrective action to consider are also listed.
Prolonged contact with hard or sharp edges
- Use padded or rounded edges on work surfaces and armrests.
- A wrist rest may be used when not mousing or typing.
Flexed or extended wrist posture during keyboard or mouse use
- Incorrect keyboard height can contribute to wrist extension or flexion, adjust keyboard height so that wrists remain in neutral position.
- Use a wrist rest and avoid resting wrists on hard surfaces during active typing or mousing.
Rapid, sustained or prolonged keyboard and mouse activity
- Ensure to take regular breaks throughout the day to stretch hands, wrists and shoulders.
- Alternate between tasks to promote movement and reduce repetitive stress
- Use an ergonomic mouse that is comfortable to the user
Hands held over keyboard even when not actively typing
- Use a wrist rest or make space on work surface to rest wrists and keep them straight.
