FASS at the Ottawa International Writers Festival
Several FASS faculty members will be participating in the Ottawa International Writers Festival, taking place during October 25 – 30.
- Professor Tim Cook’s new book The Secret History of Soldiers will be featured. Laurence Wall hosts a conversation with Tim Cook, Canada’s foremost military historian, on his portrayal of how soldiers found solace, distraction and entertainment to escape the horrors of the trenches during the Great War.
- Dr. Julie Garlen is hosting How Schools Can Prepare Our Children for the Challenges of Tomorrow with Kelly Gallagher-Mackay and Nancy Steinhauer.
- M.A. student Deborah Owusu-Akyeeah (Women’s and Gender Studies, NIPSIA) will be in conversation with Vivek Shraya in “I am afraid of men”.
- Dr. Susan Birkwood is hosting the event featuring Waubgeshig Rice and Eden Robinson in True North
with Waubgeshig Rice and Eden Robinson
- In/Words will launch Dis(s)ent.

Karim H. Karim, Diaspora and Media in Europe
Diaspora and Media in Europe: Migration, Identity, and Integration features cutting-edge theoretical material and empirical case studies. The chapters examine the uses of social media and TV for the purposes of immigrant integration in countries of settlement and continuing engagement with home countries. The case studies consider the Syrian, Somali, Turkish, Moroccan, Congolese, Nepalese and Ecuadorian diasporas living in Europe.
