Carleton University Research Opportunity Program (CUROP) Call for Applications
About
As part of the Carleton University Research Opportunity Program (CUROP), the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is hosting summer undergraduate research internships. Under supervision of a faculty member, each student participant will design their own research project and complete it over the summer. Students will receive a stipend of $10,000 (less legislated deductions) over the course of the summer. The expectation is that the research project undertaken will constitute a full-time commitment for 16 weeks from May to August 2025.
Eligibility
Students must:
- Have an overall GPA of 9.0;
- Have at least second year standing in their undergraduate program;
- Be taking a major in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (double-majors see below*);
- Complete work in Ontario and maintain legal authorization to work in Canada for the duration of the program;
- Students who will be graduating in June 2025 are eligible to apply for the program
- International students should reach out to the International Student Services Office (ISSO) for assistance and clarification of eligibility to participate
- International students graduating in 2025 interested in applying should reach out to the International Student Services Office (ISSO) for information on maintaining authorization to work in Canada
*If a student has two majors, one of the two must be in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Students are only eligible for CUROP funding in one faculty and may not hold separate CUROP-funded positions in different faculties. Students who have received a previous CUROP award are not eligible.
Application Information (Deadline: February 28, 2025)
Students are invited to submit a research project that they propose to work on during the summer of 2025 in collaboration with a full-time FASS faculty member.
Applications should be submitted in one document and sent via email to Jesse McClintock. One application per applicant will be accepted.
The application should include the following:
- Your resumé or CV
- A one-page research proposal (see samples below)
- A copy of your academic audit (Available through Carleton Central)
- A one-page cover letter describing the project you would like to research and the skills and experiences you hope to gain through this program. Your cover letter must also include the following information:
- Carleton email
- Student number
- Year standing
- Program and major
- Telephone number

Additionally, the faculty member who will be supervising the project should send a statement of support via email directly to Jesse McClintock. The statement should include the name of the student they have agreed to supervise and a brief explanation of why they support the proposed research project.
Results
A total of five (5) CUROP internships will be awarded in FASS for Summer 2025. Successful applicants will be notified in April 2025.

Q: I am in the Bachelor of Global and International Studies program. Do I apply to the internship program for FASS or FPA?
A: You should apply to the faculty that houses your specialization.
Q: Can I submit two separate research project proposals?
A: No, only one proposal per applicant will be accepted.
Q: Throughout the summer internship, will I be required to do fieldwork or online research?
A: Your research methods are of your own choosing, in consultation with your faculty supervisor.
Q: Do the summer interns get paid in one lump sum at the beginning of the summer?
A: No. Pay is bi-weekly throughout the 16-week period from May-August.
Q: Can I use one of my supervisor’s research ideas?
A: No. The research proposal must be your own independent idea.
