Explore the profound impact of Indigenous masks on Surrealism in this event held in association with the exhibition Women Carvers on the Northwest Coast.
Highlighting the fascinating connections between the work of Surrealist artists and Indigenous ceremonial masks, So Surreal: Behind the Masks takes Cree film director Neil Diamond on a journey across the ocean in quest of a Raven Transformation Mask that has defied attempts to track it down.
Following the screening, Tom McSorley of the Canadian Film Institute will moderate a discussion expanding on the film’s themes with directors Neil Diamond and Joanne Robertson.
Please note that the film is in English with French subtitles. The panel discussion will be in English, accompanied by simultaneous interpretation in French.
