A typical day at work looks like…
I have a variety of different tasks under the Chemical Management Program. The majority of my time is spend editing and reviewing risk assessments of chemical substances, focusing on exposure through foods and the risk to human health. I also coordinate with other groups in Health Canada and other government departments for assignments and files under the Chemicals Management Program. I will usually have several different files ongoing at once, so I get a lot of exposure to different projects!
My future goals are…
I have always been very interested in science, particularly food science and toxicology. My goals are to continue to gain experience in my current position and also explore other areas in toxicology.
My degree has helped me get to where I am today by…
Carleton’s Food Science program gave me a good understanding of food science which I frequently use in my position and Health Canada. Combined with my MSc, it has given me a unique understanding of food toxicology and human health risk assessment, which has helped immensely in my job.
My advice for current students is…
Try to explore your interests in both university and potential jobs. There are many opportunities out there and you may stumble upon something you really like!
