Dr. Charles Levkoe (Canada Research Chair in Sustainable Food Systems and Associate Professor at Lakehead University and Adjunct Research Professor at Carleton University) and Drs. Patricia Ballamingie and Peter Andrée (both Associate Professors at Carleton University) seek an outstanding Ph.D. student to pursue doctoral studies in the Department of Geography & Environmental Studies at Carleton, beginning Fall 2019.
We seek an exceptional candidate to undertake doctoral-level research focusing on the ways that civil society and social movement organizations engage in food systems governance at the national (and global) level. This research will explore the successes, challenges and future opportunities of establishing new collaborative governance processes that aim to build healthy, equitable and sustainable food systems. The successful candidate must have experience and interest in conducting community-based, action research and working closely with food systems organizations in the public, private and non-profit sectors.
Funding for a one-year research assistantship has been secured at the rate of $10,000 and we are aiming to offer $10,000/year for another 3 years, pending satisfactory performance and funding availability. On top of the research assistantship funding, there are departmental and faculty scholarships and supports that will comprise a competitive funding offer for the successful candidate. The successful Ph.D. candidate will support the development, coordination, and research for the Civil Society and Social Movement Engagement in Food Systems Governance project. Additionally, the student will be expected to actively work towards establishing a strong publication record and assisting in seeking external funding. Thesis research does not necessarily need to coincide directly with the topic of the assistantship.
