Biography

Ted Manning is President of Tourisk Inc., an international consulting firm delivering projects and training in the fields of sustainable development of tourism, community based regional planning, risk management for impacted communities and destinations, and the development of policy and management instruments in support of sustainable development. He also serves as Associate Director of the Centre for a Sustainable Future for the Foundation for International Training, delivering environmental management training in countries from China to Romania to Argentina. From 1993 to 2002, Dr. Manning was Director of Strategic Planning and Director of the Sustainable Development and Environmental Management Practice of Consulting and Audit Canada (CAC) Dr. Manning previously held posts as Executive Manager, Sustainable Tourism, for Tourism Canada, Associate Director of the Sustainable Development Branch of Environment Canada, Chief of Land Use Policy and Land Use Analysis in Environment Canada, Senior Planner for the Caribbean Program of the Canadian International Development Agency, and as a university lecturer in geography.

As manager of a number of research organizations, Dr. Manning has led several initiatives to produce better environmental management tools for public and private sector managers, including international work in the creation and implementation of improved environmental assessment and audit procedures for development projects, cumulative effects assessment, mechanisms for environmental accountability, and work to integrate environmental and economic analysis in decision-making. He has provided policy advice and management training to governments of more than twenty countries and leads the international initiative on indicators of sustainable development for the tourism industry for the World Tourism Organization.

He has published 21 books and over 80 articles on sustainable development, environmental planning, land management and tourism planning topics in a variety of ecological, economic, geographic and management journals. He is an Adjunct Professor in the Geography Department of Carleton University, a Fellow and Governor of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society,

a member of the Canadian Club of Rome, and is a former President of the Canadian Association of Geographers. He is recipient of the Miguel Aleman medal (Mexico) for his work in sustainable tourism, and is also a recipient of the Queens Golden Jubilee Medal for service to Canada.
