Dr. Minh Do and Dr. Paul Villeneuve were awarded funding from CIHR to study the impact of gamma radiation on cancer risk in the Ontario Uranium Miners cohort. Dr Minh Do holds an adjunct appointment within the department. This cohort includes nearly 30,000 miners who were employed between 1927 and 1987. As part of this project, the research team will reconstruct doses of gamma radiation among miners before 1981 when personal monitoring began, and compute risk estimates of cancer incidence and mortality due to gamma exposure for several cancer types including lung and leukemia. This study will begin this summer.
