This session will be presented by Professor Chris Davis, from the Department of Psychology. Professor Davis is also a Hub Research Member as part of Carleton’s Mental Health & Well-being Research & Training Hub (MeWeRTH).

Conventional wisdom holds that keeping secret from others embarrassing or undesirable information about the self takes a toll on one’s mental health and relationships. A growing body of research confirms that people who conceal important aspects of their life from significant others tend to be more depressed, anxious, and feel less authentic in their core relationships. In my presentation, I will describe research findings that help us understand when and how secret keeping takes its toll and what we can do to lessen that toll.
