[CLOSED] Call for Abstracts: Peer Writing Workshop for Displaced PhD and Early Career Researchers

The Citizenship and Migration Research Network (CMRN) at the University of Edinburgh will be hosting a one-day hybrid writing workshop for displaced PhD and Early Career Researchers looking to publish an article on themes related to forced migration. The Writing Workshop will bring together 10 PhD and early career researchers with peers from the University of Edinburgh for one to one and group feedback on their draft articles, and a series of talks about how to publish and promote your work from Editors of leading journals in the field.
The aims of the event are to:
- Provide targeted feedback from experienced peer reviewers to help develop your article to a publishable quality
- Advise on the best target journals for the articles submitted
- Show how the peer review process works, and to give participants who are new to it some experience of providing and receiving comments
- Share publishing best practice, and knowledge on how to develop a publishing strategy that maximises the impact of your work and assists with job applications
- Bring together PhD students and ECR to form a support network, and to build a sense of academic community across institutions
All participants will be expected to submit a 6-8,000-word draft of their article in advance of the day, and to provide feedback on 4 other drafts, which they will share with their peers on the day. A team of experienced peer reviewers who research displacement issues will also provide feedback on each paper. Applicants are invited to join online or in person, though the CMRN is only able to reimburse up to £100 of eligible expenses.
To apply for the workshop, please send an email to the organisers (see below) briefly outlining your career stage, why you would like to join this workshop and what you’re hoping to get out of it, with a 1,000-word sample from your proposed article attached.
The deadline for applications is the 1st of December 2022. Successful applicants will be notified by the 3rd of December, and full drafts will be expected no later than the 16th of January. This is to ensure that everybody has 10 days to read the other draft manuscripts.
Applicants who have experienced displacement will be prioritised, though we welcome all applications as we aim to ensure a complementary mix of research interests and publishing experience within the workshop.
