Mixin’ & minglin’ with Modern Languages

October 7, 2025

Time to read: 4 minutes

Thanks to everyone who joined us Friday for our inaugural Modern Language Mix & Mingle in the LLRC (Language Learning Resource Centre).

Group of students gathered around "Welcome to the Language Learning Resource Centre" sign.

Such a great mix of people: learners, conversation group organizers, TA’s, and more…and from all sorts of language backgrounds…which made it fun and easy (but not too easy) to fill out the Mix & Mingle BINGO cards. Oooh…next time let’s call it LINGO BINGO!

To those of you who have been coming to the LLRC for years, awesome to see you again! And to those of you who just discovered us, welcome! Thanks for coming and, now that you know where we are, we hope you’ll be back for more. Maybe consider attending one of our weekly conversation groups! (View schedule)

One last note. This year we are trying something new: Current Student Profiles. The idea is to include on our website something that tells people which language(s) you’re learning and why. A little inspiration! Totally no pressure, but if you’re up for it, click here to send one in. We’ll be posting them alongside profiles of Modern Language Alumni.

Mostly filled out BINGO card

Speaking of which, if you’re looking for stories about where language learning can take you, definitely check out these profiles. A Toronto firefighter who uses Chinese in his daily work. An applied linguistics grad who consults on web design and surfs the beaches Miyazaki, Japan. And a BIB grad who is now Chairperson of the Board of Directors at the Japanese Language School in Ottawa.

It is surprising (and inspiring) to see how choosing to study a language can have such a significant impact on both your career and life path.

Finally, got any other suggestions/feedback for the LLRC, click here to let us know.
