As a signed language, ASL presents a unique set of challenges to learners. Which aspects of the language did you find most engaging, surprising, and/or challenging? Has the experience of learning ASL left any lasting impressions on your behaviours and/or worldview?

Using language after graduating

Since graduating, have you put your language skills to the test? Maybe you’ve travelled to other countries for work or on vacation. Maybe you found opportunities to use your new-found language skills in your own hometown. However it happened, how was the experience, do any particular moments stand out, and/or were there any memorable doors that language helped you open?

Why study a second or additional language?(Required)

Learning a language can have practical benefits (e.g. ordering food, asking for directions) but it can also have other benefits that are more difficult to measure (e.g. connecting more authentically with people, participating more fully in daily life). Even the act of studying a language can itself be rewarding. The challenge is, these reasons are not always easy to explain. This becomes even more difficult when advances in technology promise improved real-time translation on cellphones and/or in virtual space.

So, with all this in mind, how would you explain the role and value of learning a second or additional language as part of your university experience and/or in life?
