Veronique Cossette-Sharkey stands out as one of our Master’s graduates this spring.  Prior to coming to NPSIA, she obtained her Honours Bachelor’s in Global and International Studies from Carleton University, focusing on law and social justice.  She found herself at a crossroads between law school and further studies during the uncertain times of the COVID-19 pandemic. Encouragement from professors at BGINS led her to NPSIA, where she continued to grow academically and professionally.

During her time at NPSIA, Veronique valued the numerous networking events and opportunities. One of her favourite experiences was the Ambassadors Speaking Series, which allowed her to engage with ambassadors, public servants, and peers while gaining valuable professional and personal insights. These events provided inspiration and perspective, especially for students transitioning from academic life to professional careers.

Veronique overcame challenges, particularly in her first year and with courses like statistics and economics. She surpassed these obstacles by forming study groups and leaning on the support of professors and peers, which helped her academically and fostered strong relationships within the community.

Veronique’s contributions to the NPSIA community went beyond academics. As part of the NPSIA Student Association she was an EDI co-representative alongside and Victoria Hinkson for the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) team. Her active involvement in organizing events and efforts, including a significant Black History Month panel that had more than 90 attendees, demonstrated her deep commitment to fostering inclusive events, initiatives, and dialogues through supporting underrepresented communities.

Currently employed with Global Affairs Canada, Veronique is focused on gaining more professional experience and looks forward to expanding her career paths.

Veronique’s advice to future NPSIA students is a testament to her journey and experience. She encourages them to embrace their time in the program fully, balancing academics with socializing, networking, and focusing on personal growth. NPSIA has motivated her to take the opportunities and experience different avenues to grow professionally and academically.
