NPSIA Research Colloquium: Between Canada and Ukraine: Diaspora Alignment, Temporary Protection, and Return Migration Intentions after 2022

Thursday, October 15, 2026 from 10:20 am to 11:30 am

NPSIA’s Second Research Colloquium will  take place October 15th from 10:20am to 11:30am with a presentation from Dr Milana Nikolko (EURUS) Between Canada and Ukraine: Diaspora Alignment, Temporary Protection, and Return Migration Intentions after 2022. This SSHRC funded research paper examines the post-2022 Ukrainian transnational field in Canada, highlighting a configuration of high diaspora alignment alongside low return orientation among displaced individuals. While Canadian-Ukrainian organizations strongly support Ukraine’s wartime priorities, empirical evidence indicates a trajectory toward permanent settlement. Driven by security, economic, and legal factors, return intentions transcend simple patriotism or integration. The study identifies dual paradoxes. Canadian host-state policy increasingly recognizes Ukrainians as a settled population while continuing to govern Ukrainians fleeing the war through temporariness. Ukraine continues to mobilize its expanded diaspora while lacking a fully articulated strategy for a future in which large segments of its citizens may remain abroad but stay politically, economically, and affectively connected to Ukraine.

We will circulate the chapter to those that register for the event one week beforehand (by Thursday, October 8th).
