Create a Study Plan for Finals

The key to success in finals is preparation. Start by creating a comprehensive study plan. Identify your exam dates, allocate time for each subject, and break your study sessions into focused intervals (e.g., 45-minute sessions with 15-minute breaks). A visual study schedule can help you manage your time efficiently. We have a whole Module on Studying in the PMC Learning Strategies Modules.

To Register for the PMC Learning Strategies Modules:

  1. In the “Discover” tab on the Brightspace Main page, search PMC Learning Strategies – PMC_Learning_Strategies, and select enroll.
  2. If the course does not appear, you may already be enrolled so check the “select a course” menu in Brightspace.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email the PMC Learning Strategies Team at PMC_LS@cunet.carleton.ca.

Use Study Tools Effectively

There are many digital tools that can enhance your study routine:

  • Anki for spaced repetition and effective memorization using digital flashcards.
  • Quizlet for flashcards and shared study sets.
  • Gizmo AI for creating personalized study quizzes.
  • Notebook LM for organizing and linking your notes with ease audio podcasts.

These tools can help reinforce your knowledge and track your progress.

Preparing for Take-Home Exams

Take-home exams require a unique approach. Start by reading all the instructions carefully, noting any specific requirements. Develop a strategy to organize your responses, ensuring you cite sources and structure your answers clearly. Plan your time for each part of the exam, leaving enough space to proofread your work before submission.

Final Year Projects & Presentations

If you’re working on a final-year project or preparing for a presentation, break the task into smaller steps—research, writing, creating slides, practicing, and rehearsing. Set deadlines for each step to avoid last-minute stress.

Seek Support During Stressful Times

The end of the semester can be overwhelming, especially during finals. Be sure to connect with the Wellness Desk in 204A MacOdrum Library if you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed. Remember, you have resources available to help you succeed, and taking breaks and practicing self-care are just as important as studying.
